How to Create a Teams Channel? Step-by-Step Process

Every business requires an organized platform to simplify working on projects with groups. Teams channels are a great way to have real-time collaboration, especially if your staff is remotely connected. So, here is a step-by-step guide on how to create a Teams channel.

For Desktop Users

Step 1: Open Microsoft Teams

On your desktop, open Microsoft Teams. Go to the Team where you want to create the channel.

Step 2: Add a Channel to Your Team

Now click on the 3 dots(...) next to the team name and click on “Add Channel.”

Step 3: Enter the Required Details

You will be asked to enter a name and description for the channel. Enter an appropriate name and a nice description.

Step 4: Select the Channel Type

After the name and description, you must select the channel type. There are three options: standard – everyone can access, private – only specific users can access, and shared – users from other teams can also access.

For Mobile Users

Step 4: Enter Details

Lastly, enter a name and description and select the channel type, and a channel will be created. 

How to Create Sub-Channels in Teams With Restrictions?

If you want to learn how to create sub channels in teams with restrictions, I am afraid that you can’t. There are no sub-channels in Teams. Let us break it down for you. In Microsoft Teams, there are teams that exist independently. Within these Teams, we can create channels for better organization. The channels can only be of 1 level. You cannot create sub-channels out of a channel.

How to Add Members to a Teams Channel Only?

  1. Go to the channels where you want to add the members.

  3. You can search the members of your organization by typing in the names, distribution list, and security group of Microsoft 365 group. For people outside your organizations, get a list of email addresses from the Teams channel
  4. When you are done adding the members, tap add. You can also make someone a team owner.

How to Hide, Delete, Edit, or Leave a Teams Channel?

After creating a Teams channel, you can hide, delete, edit, or leave it anytime you want. Note that some options like deleting or editing are only open to the team owners and not the members. 

  • To hide a Teams channel, you can go to the channel, click on more options(...), and select “Hide channels” from the options. 
  • Similarly, if you want to delete a channel, simply click “Delete channel” from the options. Note that you can only delete a channel if you are the owner of the channel.
  • To edit a channel, go to more options(...) and click on “Manage channel”. From there you can edit the settings of the channel.
  • To leave a channel in Microsoft Teams, you may need to leave the entire team. Currently, you can only leave a channel or completely exit from the team; there is no third option to leave a standard (public) channel without leaving the team.
