What Is Google Podcasts and Why Is It Going Away?
Google Podcasts is a free service by… you guessed it - Google. With it users can discover, subscribe and listen to podcasts. The general flow can be described as users finding and subscribing to shows, getting notified about new episodes, and then streaming or downloading them for offline listening. The platform syncs across devices, integrates with Google Assistant, and offers features like playback speed adjustment.
Well, around September 2023 Google announced it would be shutting down their platform sometime in 2024. According to Google this decision is in line with their strategic vision to improve the overall podcasting experienve on YouTube Music. By focusing on a single platform, Google aims to optimize their approach to podcasting and to respond faster to user and podcaster feedback. Essentially, this transition will allow a more steady release of new features and access to centralized feedback. This change also increases YouTube Music’s premium subscription value and turns Google’s podcasting infrastructure into a more monetizable endeavor (Google Podcasts had no subscription/premium plan).
But when is this happening? Well, it already did… if you’re in the US Google shut down Google Podcasts on the 2nd of April 2024. It will then be discontinued in all regions by the 24th of June 2024. Despite this podcasters will have access to the Google Podcasts Manager to get past content and download analytics until the 29th of July so if you’ve got episodes there be sure to do so. If you’re a listener you can be sure to export your subscriptions to YouTube Music or to your platform of choice, if supported.
